Elevating the Teaching Profession
There is a lot to be done to change conditions for teachers, and there is power in changing this story. Perceptions of what it means to be a teacher and what a teaching career looks like, are at all-time lows. Survey data shows that many people view teaching as a low paying, low satisfaction occupation. The combination of this perception with the COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to poor school climates, which in turn lead to difficulties in teacher retention and also impacts student learning.
Imagine a future where teaching is a revered profession in our society. That young people, particularly from diverse communities, are drawn towards and look at teaching as a viable career option. That teachers feel their stories are shared and feel they are a part of something bigger than themselves.
I believe that regardless of individual experience with teaching or learning, teaching as a profession is worth elevating for Minnesota and our children, especially for communities of color. I have founded Elevate Teaching to bring together experienced teachers and practitioners who are seeking systems level change throughout the education ecosystem. It's truly about building a cross-sector movement of education supporters who take on a personal commitment to change the prevailing narrative about teaching as a profession.
To realize this vision, we are activating the base by creating Action Network(s) of individuals and organizations committed to elevating the teaching profession through a process of continuous engagement. Action Network Convenings are an opportunity to engage voices and perspectives from across sectors within our expansive network of education-related professionals as well as gather feedback on project progress. Let's work together to transform how we think and talk about education!
